What is GST Registration?
GST stands for Goods and Service tax and is the biggest tax reforms that merges all other taxes in to one single tax structure. Under GST Tax regime, all goods and services are now under a single law i.e. Goods and Service Tax Laws.
All the businesses dealing in goods whose turnover exceeds INR 40 Lakhs are required to be registered under GST whereas the businesses dealing in services whose turnover exceeds 20 lakhs are to be registered under GST. Irrespective of these conditions, any business can voluntarily register under GST.
GST Registration is completely an online process and between 2-5 working days.
Who can register under GST?
- Individuals registered under the Pre-GST law (i.e., Excise, VAT, Service Tax etc.)
- Casual taxable person / Non-Resident taxable person
- Those paying tax under the reverse charge mechanism
- Every e-commerce aggregator
- Businesses with turnover above the threshold limit of Rs. 40 Lakhs* (Rs. 10 Lakhs for North-Eastern States, J&K, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand)

Benefits of GST Registration in India:
Legally recognised as supplier of goods and services
GST Registration provides a legal identity to the businesses in the form of a 15-digit unique GST Registration Number called as GSTIN. This 15-digit number is mentioned on the GST Certificate which is generated after GST Registration. The registration is permanent without any renewal requirement.
Input Tax Credit (ITC) and lower cost
After registering under GST, the business gets to utilise its benefits like input tax credit. The business can take credit of the GST paid to the previous supplier concerned with the business activities. The GST registered business can also pass the ITC to its customers.
Legally authorised to collect tax from purchasers
With voluntary or compulsory registration under GST, the supplier is eligible to collect the taxes legally from the purchaser. Further, the supplier can also pass on the credit. With GST Registration, the registered business can issue a pakka invoice to its customers.
Easy Compliance
Every registered business is required to fulfil simple compliance requirements after registering under GST. These compliances are in the form of GST returns that need to be filed periodically. These compliances are significantly simplified to save time.
