DGFT Simplifies Import Clearance for Pre-Shipment Goods
Great news for importers! The DGFT has clarified a key point under Para 2.12 of the Foreign Trade Policy, 2023. If goods have been shipped before an import Authorisation (like Advance Authorisation) was issued, but the Authorisation is obtained before Customs clearance, then warehousing is not mandatory.
This is a facilitative provision aimed at reducing costs and easing the clearance process. Importers can now directly clear such goods for home consumption without going through warehousing — saving both time and money.
Note: This exemption does not apply to ‘Restricted’ items or goods traded through State Trading Enterprises (STEs), unless specifically permitted by DGFT.
This move comes in response to multiple representations and is a step towards making trade processes smoother and more efficient.
